In short: Created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, this Netflix comedy-drama reimagines the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. By blending the grit of 1980s Los Angeles with the complex personal lives of its performers, the show explores whether the wrestling ring was a site of female exploitation or a rare form of empowerment.

The series originated when its creators discovered a 2012 documentary detailing the history of the original wrestling promotion. Intrigued by the premise, they sought to examine the legacy of the 1970s women's movement through the lens of the following decade. The narrative centers on Ruth Wilder, an idealistic actress, and her strained relationship with former friend Debbie Eagan. Their personal conflict serves as the anchor for a broader ensemble cast navigating the professional and social pressures of Southern California and Nevada during the 1980s.

Authenticity was a priority for the production. The team enlisted Ursula Hayden, an original wrestler from the 1980s circuit, as a consultant, alongside Chavo Guerrero Jr., who managed the physical training for the actresses. While the show features a fictionalized version of events, it incorporates real-life wrestling figures and draws on the aesthetic of the era, utilizing iconic locations like the San Fernando Masonic Lodge and the Pink Motel to ground the story in a tangible, period-accurate environment.

Despite critical acclaim and high ratings across three seasons, the show faced an abrupt end. Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season in 2019, but production was halted in March 2020 due to the global pandemic. By October 2020, the project was officially canceled. The decision was driven by the high costs of implementing safety protocols for a wrestling-themed production and the logistical challenge of managing a multi-year gap between seasons, leaving the final chapter of the story unfilmed.
