How a $140 million fantasy epic became a cautionary tale in Hollywood history
In short: The 2016 film Gods of Egypt promised a grand mythological spectacle but instead delivered a masterclass in production controversy. Despite a massive budget and a star-studded cast, the project faced immediate backlash over its casting choices and ultimately suffered a catastrophic financial collapse that left industry analysts stunned.
Directed by Alex Proyas, the 2016 fantasy action film Gods of Egypt attempted to bring ancient Egyptian deities to the big screen. The narrative centers on the god Horus, who joins forces with a mortal thief to save the world from the god Set. The production featured a notable ensemble, including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, and Gerard Butler, with filming conducted in Australia through a collaboration between Summit Entertainment, Thunder Road Pictures, and Mystery Clock Cinema.
The film's financial structure was complex. While the total production budget reached $140 million, the parent company, Lionsgate, managed to limit its direct financial exposure to under $10 million. This was achieved through a combination of pre-sales and significant tax incentives, including a 46% tax credit provided by the Australian government. Despite these safeguards, the film's commercial performance was dismal. Upon its release on February 26, 2016, in the United States, Canada, and 70 other markets, it grossed only $150.7 million, leading to an estimated loss of $90 million for Lionsgate.
Beyond the financial failure, the film became a lightning rod for criticism regarding its casting. When promotional efforts began in November 2015, the public immediately condemned the decision to cast predominantly white actors as Egyptian deities. Both the studio and director Proyas issued formal apologies for the ethnically inaccurate casting choices. The critical reception remained overwhelmingly negative, culminating in five nominations at the 37th Golden Raspberry Awards, cementing the film's reputation as a significant misfire in modern cinema history.
