How a daily Dutch soap opera redefined television habits for over three decades
In short: Since its 1990 debut, Goede tijden, slechte tijden has anchored Dutch television. As the first daily soap in Europe, it transformed viewing habits, evolving from an Australian adaptation into a cultural institution. Today, it remains the highest-rated soap in the Netherlands, blending classic family drama with increasingly daring, modern storylines.
Launched on October 1, 1990, Goede tijden, slechte tijden—often abbreviated as GTST—pioneered the daily soap format in the Netherlands and across Europe. Produced by Joop van den Ende, the series was initially modeled after the Australian production The Restless Years. However, by its third season, the show shifted toward original scripts, allowing it to cultivate a distinct identity centered on the fictional town of Meerdijk and the interconnected lives of families like the Alberts, Sanders, and De Jongs.
The show’s longevity is matched by its adaptability. While early episodes relied on conventional themes of marriage and business, recent years have seen the production embrace more controversial narratives. A notable milestone occurred on Christmas Day in 2014, when the series featured the first gay marriage ever depicted on a Dutch television program. This willingness to push boundaries has helped the show maintain its relevance, even as viewing habits have shifted from traditional broadcast television to on-demand streaming via platforms like Videoland.
Despite the changing media landscape, GTST remains a dominant force. At its peak, the show commanded an audience of roughly 1.5 million daily viewers in a nation of 15 million. By 2022, it maintained a combined reach of over 1 million viewers, split between television broadcasts and digital streaming. The show’s structure, defined by its signature summer hiatuses ending in dramatic, high-stakes cliffhangers, has become a staple of Dutch pop culture. Beyond its plot, the series has served as a launchpad for many prominent Dutch actors, including Katja Schuurman and Reinout Oerlemans, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the national entertainment industry after more than 33 years on the air.
