How a small, irregular music magazine became the definitive voice for American guitarists
In short: Launched in 1980 with a modest budget and an inconsistent schedule, Guitar World transformed from a niche publication into the best-selling guitar magazine in the United States. Its evolution reflects the shifting tides of rock culture, from early struggles with identity to a powerhouse of modern music journalism.
Founded by Stanley Harris in July 1980, the magazine initially faced significant growing pains. Its debut issue, featuring Johnny Winter, was a slim 82-page publication produced by a small staff. For its first 12 years, the magazine lacked a consistent monthly release schedule. Early editorial leadership struggled to define the publication's focus, at one point alienating readers by pivoting toward jazz-fusion, a move that publisher Dennis Page later admitted caused the magazine to lose its way.
The turning point arrived in 1989 when Brad Tolinski assumed the lead role. Tolinski shifted the magazine's aesthetic and editorial direction toward the burgeoning metal scene, famously contrasting the timid image of Allan Holdsworth with the explosive energy of Zakk Wylde. This era marked a transition from black-and-white layouts to full-color photography, cementing the magazine's identity. Under various editors, including Jeff Kitts and current editor-in-chief Damian Fanelli, the publication has maintained its dominance, even as it navigated controversies regarding its cover imagery.
Throughout its history, the magazine has expanded its reach through sister publications and digital growth. While ventures like Guitar School and Guitar World Acoustic eventually shuttered, the brand successfully acquired competitors like Guitar One in 2003. Today, the magazine is published 13 times per year by Future plc. Its online counterpart, GuitarWorld.com, has become a massive digital hub, reaching 3.3 million users per month as of 2022, effectively bridging the gap between legacy print journalism and the modern, high-speed demands of the global guitar community.
