In short: Filmed exclusively from the first-person perspective, this 2015 action thriller places viewers directly behind the eyes of a resurrected cyborg. While critics were divided on its narrative depth, the film’s relentless, high-octane visual style pushed the boundaries of how action sequences are captured and experienced on the big screen.

Directed by Ilya Naishuller, Hardcore Henry emerged from the success of his music videos for the band Biting Elbows, which utilized similar first-person GoPro techniques. To achieve the film's immersive look, cinematographer Vsevolod Kaptur developed the 'Adventure Mask,' a custom rig featuring GoPro cameras and magnetic stabilization systems designed to mimic natural human head movement. The production required over ten different actors to portray the protagonist, Henry, as the physical demands of the camera rig caused severe neck pain and even led to a lost tooth for stuntman Andrei Dementiev.

The plot follows Henry, an amnesiac cyborg revived by his supposed wife, Estelle, only to be thrust into a violent conflict against a psychokinetic mercenary named Akan. Throughout the film, Henry is aided by various iterations of a character named Jimmy, who is later revealed to be a quadriplegic scientist controlling multiple clones. The narrative culminates in a twist revealing that the entire mission was a corporate ruse designed to manipulate cyborgs into performing terrorist acts, a revelation that triggers Henry's final, brutal confrontation with Akan and Estelle.

Despite a modest $2 million budget, the film became a high-profile acquisition at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, where STX Entertainment secured worldwide rights for $10 million. While it grossed $16.8 million globally, the high costs of distribution and marketing led it to be considered a financial disappointment in the United States. Critical reception remained polarized; American reviewers often criticized the lack of character development, while Russian critics offered significantly higher praise. Regardless of its box-office performance, the film remains a landmark in technical innovation, utilizing open-source software like Blender for its visual effects and proving that a feature-length, first-person action film could sustain a theatrical audience.
