In short: Released in 1924, this psychological thriller was the inaugural production fully created by the newly established Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Beyond its historical significance, the film introduced the world to the studio's famous lion logo, while showcasing a haunting, career-defining performance by Lon Chaney as a scientist turned circus performer.

The film is based on a 1915 Russian play by Leonid Andreyev, which premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre. The story follows Paul Beaumont, a brilliant scientist whose life is shattered when his patron, Baron Regnard, steals his research and humiliates him publicly. Rebranded as a circus clown who thrives on being slapped, Beaumont seeks vengeance years later when his path crosses with the Baron again. The film's conclusion differs significantly from the original play; while the movie ends with the death of the clown, the stage version features a darker sequence involving poison and suicide.

Lon Chaney’s portrayal of the protagonist was widely celebrated, with director Victor Sjöström calling him the finest actor of his era. To prepare for the role, Chaney received coaching from George Davis, a European clown. The production was a major success for the studio, earning $881,000 against a profit of $349,000. Critics of the time, including those at The New York Times and Variety, lauded the film for its direction and emotional depth, often describing it as a triumph for Chaney.

The film holds a unique place in cinema history, having been selected for the National Film Registry in 2017 for its cultural and historical importance. It entered the public domain in 2020. Despite long-standing rumors, historians agree that Bela Lugosi did not appear in the film, debunking a theory based on a misidentified still from a personal scrapbook. Today, the film remains a subject of interest, with recent efforts including a 2024 4K restoration by Blackhawk Films and various musical scores composed for live screenings, such as those by Will Gregory and the Alloy Orchestra.
