In short: In the 2010 French romantic comedy Heartbreaker, a charming specialist is hired to sabotage a seemingly perfect wedding. As he orchestrates elaborate ruses to win over the bride, he faces an unexpected dilemma: he begins to fall for his target, forcing him to choose between his business and his heart.

Directed by Pascal Chaumeil in his feature debut, Heartbreaker follows Alex, a man who operates a unique service alongside his sister, Mélanie, and her husband, Marc. They specialize in ending relationships where the woman is unhappy but unaware of it, using custom-designed deceptions. Their operation is strictly professional, driven by a set of honorable principles, until a wealthy florist and gangster hires them to break up his daughter Juliette’s engagement to a wealthy Englishman named Jonathan. With only ten days until the wedding, the team struggles to find any flaws in the couple, who appear genuinely perfect for each other.

Facing significant debt to a loan shark, Alex reluctantly accepts the contract. He infiltrates Juliette’s life in Monte Carlo by posing as her bodyguard, meticulously researching her interests to manufacture a false connection. He pretends to love Roquefort cheese, the music of George Michael, and the film Dirty Dancing to win her over. As they grow closer, the line between his performance and reality blurs. The tension peaks when the couple recreates the final dance from Dirty Dancing, leading to a confession of feelings that forces Alex to confront the hollowness of his own life.

The film’s production was a global effort, with principal photography beginning on 5 June 2009. Locations spanned Morocco, Monaco, and Paris, including iconic spots like the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and the Place des Victoires. Following its world premiere at the L'Alpe d'Huez International Comedy Film Festival in January 2010, the film achieved commercial success, grossing $48 million worldwide. Critics generally responded with moderate praise, noting the charm of lead actor Romain Duris. The film's impact was significant enough that by May 2010, Working Title Films had acquired the rights for a United States remake, highlighting the enduring appeal of this lighthearted, albeit fluffy, take on the romantic comedy genre.
