Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi epic Hope pits a rural Korean village against an alien invasion
In short: When wildfires sever communication in a remote South Korean village, a local police chief and his deputy discover a terrifying truth: the creature massacring their community is not a stray tiger, but an intelligent, indestructible alien. This high-stakes battle for survival marks a massive, record-breaking return for director Na Hong-jin.
Released in 2026, Hope is an ambitious science fiction project directed by Na Hong-jin, his first feature since the 2016 film The Wailing. The narrative follows Ko Bum-seok, a police chief in the isolated village of Hope Harbor, who initially investigates reports of dead cattle. Alongside a retired colonel and a rookie officer, he soon realizes the threat is far more advanced than a wild animal. The creatures are revealed to be extraterrestrial beings operating from a crashed spaceship, led by the Empress J'aur and her subordinates, who are searching for their lost infant.
The production of Hope was marked by significant scale, reportedly commanding the highest budget of any Korean film to date. Filming took place in 2023 across locations in Bukpyeong-myeon, South Korea, and the Retezat Mountains in Romania. The ensemble cast features international stars including Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who play alien characters, alongside Korean actors like Hwang Jung-min and Zo In-sung. Notably, the film marks the first on-screen collaboration for the married couple Vikander and Fassbender since 2016.
The film premiered at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May 2026, competing for the Palme d'Or. Its commercial performance has been robust, securing 1.5 million admissions during its opening weekend in South Korea and grossing over $35 million locally by August 2026. While critics have offered generally positive reviews, noting its impressive production design and intense action sequences, the film has sparked discussion regarding its blend of human drama and sci-fi spectacle. It currently stands as the third-highest grossing Korean film in North American history, trailing only The King of Kings and Parasite.
