How do you film the life of a man who refuses to be found?
In short: Todd Haynes’s 2007 experimental drama I’m Not There rejects the traditional biopic. Instead of a single narrative, it fractures Bob Dylan’s persona into six distinct characters—played by actors including Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale—to capture the elusive, shifting nature of a musical icon who constantly skirts his own identity.
To represent the breadth of a creative life, director Todd Haynes avoided the tidy arc of a master narrative. He instead structured the film as a collage, using six actors to embody different facets of Dylan: a poet, a prophet, an outlaw, a fake, a rock and roll martyr, and a star of electricity. This strategy was inspired by Arthur Rimbaud’s declaration, "I is someone else," and aimed to refract, rather than condense, the subject’s life story.
The casting choices were intentionally provocative, featuring a woman, Cate Blanchett, and an African-American child, Marcus Carl Franklin, among the leads. Critics praised this approach, particularly Blanchett’s portrayal of the mid-1960s Dylan. Reviewers noted that her performance captured an invisible vulnerability and fear behind the singer’s acerbic public persona. Despite the film's artistic acclaim and inclusion on multiple top-ten lists for 2007, it underperformed commercially, grossing $11 million against a $20 million budget.
The film deliberately avoids resolving the enigmas of its subject. Dylan himself, who granted permission for the project after reviewing a one-page synopsis, later remarked that he thought the film was "all right" and praised the actors. By refusing to provide the absolute truths or answers that fans often crave, Haynes created a work that mirrors Dylan’s own evasive nature. As Roger Ebert observed, the film leaves the audience no closer to comprehending the man, which is exactly as it should be.
