How a free daily newspaper became the most read publication in Israel
In short: Launched in 2007, Israel Hayom disrupted the local media landscape by distributing its print edition for free. Backed by significant investment, it quickly climbed to the top of readership rankings. Today, it stands as a major force in Israeli journalism, known for its right-wing editorial stance and international reach.
Founded on 30 July 2007, Israel Hayom was established as a free daily newspaper in Israel. The venture was financed by the American casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who invested at least $50 million into the project. While widely associated with Adelson, his attorney clarified in 2016 that the paper was actually owned by one of his relatives. Miriam Adelson currently serves as the publisher of the outlet.
The newspaper's business model faced intense scrutiny, with critics arguing that its free distribution model harmed free enterprise and targeted the existing print industry. Between 2007 and 2014, internal records revealed that the publication lost approximately 730 million shekels, or about $190 million, which amounted to roughly one shekel for every copy printed. Despite these losses, the paper expanded its reach, acquiring media outlets like Makor Rishon and nrg in 2014.
Israel Hayom has consistently maintained a right-wing editorial position, which has influenced its coverage of domestic politics and international affairs. In 2016, the paper notably endorsed the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, signaling an alignment with global conservative movements. Its influence continues to grow; in June 2024, the paper announced a partnership with the German tabloid Bild to collaborate on joint investigations and articles published simultaneously in both nations.
The paper's dominance in the market is reflected in recent readership data. According to a TGI survey from 1 January 2024, Israel Hayom holds a 27.4% weekday readership exposure, maintaining its position as the most read newspaper in the country. This success follows a trend established in July 2010, when it first surpassed Yedioth Ahronoth in weekday exposure rates, cementing its role as a central pillar of the Israeli media landscape.
