In short: During a mysterious Industrial Revolution plague, humans transform into aggressive, iron-hearted creatures called Kabane. To survive, the remnants of society retreat into fortified stations, relying on steam-powered trains to navigate the dangerous landscape. One engineer discovers a way to fight back, but his success comes at a heavy, hybrid cost.

The series follows Ikoma, a young steamsmith who develops a specialized weapon capable of piercing the iron-protected hearts of the Kabane. When his home, Aragane Station, is overrun after a hijacked train crashes into its defenses, Ikoma is bitten. By blocking his carotid arteries, he prevents the virus from reaching his brain, transforming into a Kabaneri—a human-Kabane hybrid with enhanced strength and endurance.

Alongside a mysterious fellow Kabaneri named Mumei, Ikoma joins the survivors aboard the Kōtetsujō, an armored locomotive. The narrative explores the brutal philosophy of Biba Amatori, the leader of the Hunters, who believes only the strong deserve to survive. Biba’s quest for vengeance against his father, the shogun, drives much of the conflict, as he utilizes artificial Kabaneri to sow destruction across the island country of Hinomoto.

Directed by Tetsurō Araki and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, the 12-episode series debuted in 2016 on Fuji TV's Noitamina block. It was later expanded through compilation films and a 2019 sequel, The Battle of Unato, which explores the tragic origins of a nest-like creature known as a Nue. The franchise has also spawned a manga adaptation, a mobile game, and a dedicated soundtrack composed by Hiroyuki Sawano.

The show received significant critical recognition, winning five categories at the 2016 Newtype Anime Awards, including Best TV Anime and Best Screenplay. While the Kabane remain a constant threat, the series focuses heavily on the internal struggles of its characters as they grapple with their humanity, the necessity of blood to suppress the virus, and the moral complexities of survival in a collapsing world.
