In short: Before it became a record-breaking television hit, Kickin' It was born from creator Jim O'Doherty's personal history. After his own childhood dojo on Long Island was converted into a veterinary clinic, he channeled that experience into a story about a struggling martial arts academy and the unlikely friendships found within.

Created by Jim O'Doherty, Kickin' It debuted on Disney XD on June 13, 2011. The show follows a group of underdogs at the Bobby Wasabi Martial Arts Academy, a facility located in a strip mall that holds the reputation of being the worst dojo in a nationwide chain. To revitalize the academy's image, the group recruits a new member named Jack, who helps them navigate the complexities of karate, friendship, and life.

The premise was deeply personal for O'Doherty, who had earned a green belt in martial arts during his youth. His inspiration was further solidified by his own daughters' interest in the sport. Produced by It's a Laugh Productions, the series featured an ensemble cast including Jason Earles, Leo Howard, Mateo Arias, Dylan Riley Snyder, Alex Christian Jones, and Olivia Holt. The show remained on air until March 25, 2015, spanning four seasons.

The series made an immediate impact upon its launch, securing its place as the highest-rated series premiere in the history of Disney XD, including the network's previous iteration as Toon Disney. It performed exceptionally well across key demographics, particularly among children aged 6 to 11, where it set an all-time record for the network. Throughout its run, the cast evolved; for instance, Alex Christian Jones departed after the second season, and Olivia Holt left following the third season to pursue other projects.

The production process was marked by steady growth and renewal. Originally ordered under the working title Wasabi Warriors in November 2010, the show began production in Hollywood in early 2011. Subsequent renewals occurred annually, with the fourth season moving production to Los Angeles. By blending O'Doherty's nostalgic connection to martial arts with a classic underdog narrative, the series successfully captured a wide audience of kids and tweens.
