Why Takeshi Kitano named his heartwarming road trip film after his own gambler father
In short: Kikujiro is a 1999 Japanese road drama that subverts the typical crime-heavy style of director Takeshi Kitano. While the film follows a young boy’s quest to find his mother, the title character—a brash, lazy neighbor—is a tribute to Kitano’s own father, a man who struggled to provide for his family.
Released in 1999, Kikujiro marks a significant departure from the gritty yakuza crime dramas like Sonatine and Hana-bi for which Takeshi Kitano is best known. Instead, this road movie, which was entered into the Cannes Film Festival, leans into a light-hearted, episodic structure inspired by The Wizard of Oz. The narrative follows Masao, a young boy living with his grandmother in Tokyo, who sets out for Toyohashi to find his long-lost mother. He is accompanied by a neighbor—the titular Kikujiro—who is forced into the role of a guardian by his wife.
The journey is defined by bizarre encounters and a series of vignettes that mirror the boy’s summer vacation diary. While the plot is anchored in the sadness of Masao’s disappointment upon finding his mother living a new life, the film uses these moments to explore themes of alienation and inclusion. The protagonists, along with the eccentric travelers they meet—including a poet and two bikers—are social outcasts who exist outside traditional family structures. Through their shared isolation, the characters find a form of comfort, shifting from initial anger and sadness to a sense of mutual support.
The film’s emotional resonance is bolstered by a score from Joe Hisaishi, featuring the iconic composition 'Summer.' Behind the scenes, the production was documented by director Makoto Shinozaki in the film Jam Session. Though the film received mixed critical reviews upon release, it remains a distinct entry in Kitano’s filmography. It serves as a personal reflection on the director's own history; the character of Kikujiro is named after Kitano’s father, a gambler who struggled to pay rent and feed his family. In a poignant final scene, the boy finally learns the name of the man who guided him, cementing a bond forged through a summer of shared, unconventional kindness.
