The man who traded 'authentic slime' for rock stardom
In short: Kim Fowley was the ultimate rock Svengali—a flamboyant, physically imposing figure who shaped the Sunset Strip. From producing No. 1 hits to manufacturing the myth of the all-girl band The Runaways, Fowley operated in the shadows of fame, balancing artistic genius with a predatory, exploitative hustle.
Born in 1939 as the son of a character actor and an actress, Fowley was an 'orphan of Hollywood' whose life was marked by early tragedy. After being abandoned by his mother and suffering from polio as a child—a disease that left him with a distinct physical appearance—he began a career that spanned the entire spectrum of the music industry. He was a versatile 'scenester' who worked with everyone from Cat Stevens and Frank Zappa to the heavy metal pioneers of Kiss and Alice Cooper.
Fowley's career was built on a mastery of the 'novelty' and the 'cult.' In the early 1960s, he helped craft hits like 'Alley Oop' and 'Nut Rocker,' while also producing for the Rivingtons. By the 1970s, he had become a king of the Sunset Strip, a louche intersection where glam and punk collided. He was known for his peach-colored jumpsuits, kabuki-style makeup, and a vision of 'golden garbage'—a desire to capture raw, authentic noise rather than polished commercialism.
However, his legacy is inextricably tied to the exploitation of the young. As the manager of The Runaways, Fowley assembled a group of teenagers aged 15 to 17. While he championed them as 'Amazons' and a 'sports team with musical instruments,' he was simultaneously accused of being a predator who looked for 'prey.' He was known to set band members against one another to maintain control, leading to a cycle of financial mismanagement, drug use, and emotional wreckage that eventually caused the band to implode after less than two years.
