Three centuries after Caesar, apes rule a world where humans have turned feral
In short: In this latest installment of the rebooted franchise, the legacy of the legendary ape leader Caesar has warped into a dark age. A young chimpanzee named Noa discovers a hidden human world, sparking a dangerous collision between two species struggling to define their future in a post-human landscape.
Set 300 years after the death of Caesar, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes explores a world where primates have ascended to dominance while humanity has regressed into a feral state. Director Wes Ball envisioned this era as a primate Dark Ages, where knowledge of the past is fragmented and often misinterpreted. The story follows Noa, a young chimpanzee from a clan of falconers, whose life is upended when a ruthless gorilla general named Proximus Caesar raids his village to enslave his people.
Proximus Caesar serves as a complex antagonist who justifies his brutal expansionism by claiming to uphold Caesar's teachings, though he actively subverts them to consolidate power. He is obsessed with reclaiming lost human technology, viewing himself as an innovator akin to Thomas Edison. His quest leads him to a fortified human vault, where he hopes to unlock weapons and tools that could solidify ape supremacy. This ambition forces Noa into an uneasy alliance with Mae, an intelligent human scavenger who possesses her own secret agenda regarding the vault's contents.
The film was produced following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, with principal photography taking place in Sydney. To achieve its realistic aesthetic, the production team relied on a blend of on-location filming and advanced motion-capture technology, eschewing the virtual volume sets used in other contemporary blockbusters. The film's visual effects were recognized with a nod for excellence in the category at the 97th Academy Awards. While the movie grossed over $397 million globally, it remains a point of discussion whether the apes and humans depicted can ever truly coexist, a question left lingering as the characters look toward an uncertain future.
Beyond the narrative, the film serves as a bridge to a larger cinematic universe. By incorporating themes of space and the potential for human resurgence, the creators intentionally left certain elements ambiguous. The production also utilized innovative techniques to render lifelike interactions between digital characters and water, drawing on expertise from the Avatar franchise to ensure the apes appeared grounded in their environment.
