The man who defined the sound of 1990s Indian romance
In short: Before the era of streaming, one voice dominated the airwaves of India. Kumar Sanu didn't just sing for films; he became the sonic shorthand for love. From a Guinness World Record to a five-year award streak, discover how he built a musical empire one melody at a time.
Born Kedarnath Bhattacharya, Sanu's journey to stardom was paved by lineage and mentorship. His father, Pashupati Bhattacharya, was a vocalist and composer. In 1989, the singer Jagjit Singh introduced him to the legendary composing duo Kalyanji and Anandji, who suggested he adopt his professional stage name, Kumar Sanu. This transition marked the beginning of a prolific career that would see him record in over a dozen languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and Tamil.
His breakthrough arrived with the 1990 soundtrack of Aashiqui, which established his signature romantic style. This success was immediate and overwhelming; Sanu won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for five consecutive years between 1991 and 1995. During this peak, he recorded for massive cultural touchstones like Saajan, Deewana, and 1942: A Love Story. His productivity was staggering, notably earning him a Guinness World Record in 1993 for recording 28 songs in a single day.
As the 1990s progressed, Sanu navigated a shifting industry. While he maintained a near-monopoly on romantic playback singing until the mid-90s, the late 90s saw a transition as new competitors emerged. Despite the increased competition, he remained an elite-level artist, appearing on major soundtracks like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Today, his legacy is preserved through nostalgia concerts and tribute albums, while he continues to contribute to the industry through television, new-age collaborations, and philanthropic work in Delhi.
