In short: In the 1981 comedy La Chèvre, a private investigator is forced to partner with an accountant whose life is defined by constant, inexplicable bad luck. The goal? Use his misfortune as a magnet to track down a kidnapped heiress in Mexico, proving that sometimes, chaos is the most effective strategy.

Directed by Francis Veber, La Chèvre (1981) established the iconic comic duo of Pierre Richard and Gérard Depardieu. The plot follows Campana, an expert detective who fails to locate a missing heiress in Puerto Vallarta. Desperate, the girl's father adopts a bizarre theory from his company psychologist: since Campana is too logical to find the girl, he must pair up with François Perrin, an accountant whose life is a relentless string of mishaps.

The film relies on the premise that Perrin’s bad luck is so profound it acts as a supernatural force. Throughout their journey, Perrin’s clumsy accidents repeatedly lead the pair toward the kidnappers. While Campana initially views Perrin with exasperation, he eventually fears he is being 'contaminated' by his partner's misfortune. The dynamic shifts from professional investigation to a series of absurdist, high-stakes encounters, including a plane crash and a trek through the jungle.

The film’s humor stems from the tension between Campana’s competence and Perrin’s unintentional chaos. When the pair eventually find themselves lost in the forest, Campana confesses that Perrin is merely a 'goat'—a lure for bad luck intended to draw the kidnappers out. Despite the absurdity, the strategy succeeds when Perrin, while recovering from a coma in a mission infirmary, accidentally discovers the missing heiress in the bed next to him.

La Chèvre was a critical success, earning a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film from the U.S. National Board of Review in 1985. While it remains a classic of French comedy, it is also remembered for a tragic association: the film was playing during the 1983 Cinema Statuto fire in Turin, which claimed 64 lives. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the mismatched buddy-cop formula, later remade in the United States as the 1991 film Pure Luck.
