In short: Released in 2009, Land of the Lost was a high-budget reimagining of a beloved Saturday morning show. Despite an ensemble cast led by Will Ferrell, the film was panned by critics and audiences alike, eventually being labeled one of the costliest box office failures of all time.

Directed by Brad Silberling, the 2009 film Land of the Lost attempted to transform the family-friendly premise of Sid and Marty Krofft’s original 1970s television series into an adult-oriented comedy. The film follows Dr. Rick Marshall, a disgraced scientist who, alongside a research assistant and a theme park owner, is transported to an alternate dimension. Unlike the original show, which targeted children, the film incorporated profanity, drug references, and risqué humor, replacing the classic stop-motion puppets with computer-generated imagery.

The production struggled to find its footing. Despite a $100 million budget, the film grossed only $69 million worldwide. Its opening weekend was particularly disappointing, earning $19 million against expectations of $30 million. Critics were largely unimpressed, with the film holding a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 32/100 score on Metacritic. Reviewers frequently described the movie as a collection of inconsistent sketches rather than a cohesive narrative, with some critics, such as Kirk Honeycutt, calling it a lethargic failure of imagination.

The film's legacy is defined by its poor reception. It received seven nominations at the 30th Golden Raspberry Awards, winning for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel. Even the original creators, Sid and Marty Krofft, later apologized for the film, calling it one of the worst ever made. While some, like Roger Ebert, offered moderate praise for its goofball charm, the film remains a cautionary tale in Hollywood, eventually appearing on the Los Angeles Times list of the costliest box office flops of all time.
