The original script for Lethal Weapon 2 ended with the death of Martin Riggs
In short: Before it became a blockbuster buddy-cop comedy, the sequel to Lethal Weapon was a dark, violent drama. Writer Shane Black envisioned a tragic conclusion where Riggs sacrificed himself to save his partner, but studio executives rejected the draft, demanding a lighter tone and a future for the franchise.
In 1987, producer Joel Silver commissioned Shane Black to write the follow-up to the hit action film. Working with novelist Warren Murphy, Black produced a script titled Play Dirty. Unlike the final film, this version was gritty and somber, focusing on themes of heroism and self-sacrifice. In Black's original vision, Riggs was an emotionally damaged man who found peace only by dying to protect his friend Roger Murtaugh and his family. Black later described this death scene as his finest writing, believing it provided a beautiful, cathartic end to the character's arc.
The studio, Silver, and director Richard Donner ultimately rejected the script. They felt it was too bloody and dark, and they were unwilling to kill off a lead character who could anchor future sequels. Black, who had spent six months on the project, refused to rewrite his work and departed the series. The final screenplay was instead crafted by Jeffrey Boam, who was tasked with blending hard-boiled action with more comedy. Boam faced constant pressure to revise his work, often rewriting scenes during production to accommodate Donner's preference for improvisation.
The resulting 1989 film, which earned roughly $227.9 million globally, diverged significantly from Black's draft. Characters like Leo Getz, who was a minor figure in the original script, were expanded into series staples. Other elements, such as the brutal torture of police officers and a climactic battle set amidst a massive brush fire, were discarded in favor of the final, more conventional action-comedy structure. While the film was a commercial success and received generally favorable reviews, Black remained critical of the shift in tone, expressing his dislike for how the franchise evolved in subsequent installments.
