In short: Lewis Tan’s journey into Hollywood began before he could even walk. Born to a fashion model and a martial arts stunt coordinator, Tan moved to Los Angeles at age one to live in the shadow of major blockbusters, eventually carving out a career defined by high-octane physical performance.

Joanne Cassidy and Philip Tan welcomed their son, Lewis Tan, in Salford, Greater Manchester, on 4 February 1987. His upbringing was inherently tied to the mechanics of action cinema; his father, a Chinese Singaporean martial artist and stunt coordinator, moved the family to Los Angeles when Tan was just one year old. Because his dad secured a role coordinating fights for the 1989 Batman movie by Tim Burton, the family relocated. Growing up in a nomadic environment, Tan lived in China, France, and Spain before beginning formal theatre training in his early teens.

Tan’s career is characterized by a transition from supporting television roles in series like CSI: Miami and NCIS: Los Angeles to leading and recurring roles in major franchises. He gained significant visibility in the late 2010s, starring as Shatterstar in Deadpool 2 and appearing in the Mortal Kombat reboot as Cole Young. His involvement with the Mortal Kombat media franchise actually began earlier with the unreleased web series Mortal Kombat X: Generations, where he was recruited by action director Garrett Warren to play Kung Jin.

What distinguishes Tan’s work is his commitment to physical authenticity. He gained recognition by executing his own stunts, employing various techniques such as Ju-Jitsu, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, and Japanese katana swordplay. This technical foundation, passed down from his father, has allowed him to move seamlessly between television dramas like Shadow and Bone and high-profile action roles in projects like Cobra Kai and Wu Assassins.
