A Nazi officer's daughter confronts the collapse of her world in post-war Germany
In short: In the aftermath of World War II, five siblings are abandoned by their high-ranking Nazi parents. Forced to trek 900 kilometers across a fractured landscape, they encounter a mysterious Jewish survivor. This journey forces a young girl to confront the shattering reality of her upbringing and the atrocities of her fatherland.
Directed by Cate Shortland and based on Rachel Seiffert’s 2001 novel The Dark Room, the 2012 film Lore follows a teenage girl, Hannelore Dressler, played by Saskia Rosendahl. After her parents disappear to avoid arrest by Allied authorities, Lore is left to lead her four younger siblings to their grandmother’s home near Hamburg. The film captures the moral dislocation of a generation raised on Nazi ideology, now forced to navigate a country defined by the ruins of their parents' regime.
The narrative tension centers on the group's uneasy alliance with a man claiming to be Thomas, a Jewish concentration camp survivor. As they travel through the Soviet and British sectors, Lore struggles with her indoctrinated prejudices while relying on Thomas for survival. The film’s visual language, described by critics as fractured and impressionistic, mirrors the internal collapse of Lore’s worldview. The journey culminates in a stark realization: the man she relied on was an imposter, using Jewish identity papers to navigate the American-occupied zones safely.
Upon reaching their grandmother’s home, Lore finds herself unable to return to the normalcy of her former life. Her rejection of her grandmother’s authoritarianism and the destruction of her mother’s porcelain figurines symbolize her final break from the past. The film, which holds a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was Australia’s submission for the 85th Academy Awards. It received widespread critical acclaim for its ominous tone and Rosendahl’s performance, ultimately winning numerous honors including the Bronze Horse at the Stockholm International Film Festival.
