A Jane Austen adaptation that plays more like a heist movie than a romance
In short: Whit Stillman’s 2016 film Love & Friendship reimagines Jane Austen’s epistolary novel Lady Susan as a sharp, comedic caper. Rather than a traditional period drama, the film follows a calculating widow’s ruthless social maneuvers, proving that Austen’s work can be as irreverent and inventive as a modern heist film.
Director Whit Stillman, known for his studies of urban manners, found Jane Austen’s Lady Susan—written around 1794—to be an overlooked gem. While the source material was rarely adapted, Stillman felt the story was too good to remain obscure. He approached the project not with typical reverence, but with a desire to highlight its freewheeling sense of fun. Stillman even drew cinematographic inspiration from the comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, resulting in a film that feels less like a conventional romance and more like a contrived, inventive heist.
The narrative centers on the recently widowed Lady Susan Vernon, portrayed by Kate Beckinsale. Seeking to secure wealthy matches for herself and her daughter, Frederica, Susan navigates the social landscape with a magnetism that keeps her in control of every situation. Even when her dalliances are exposed, she manages to manipulate those around her, including the enchanted Reginald DeCourcy. The film’s ensemble cast, including Chloë Sevigny and Tom Bennett, brings a heightened, self-aware energy to the screen. Critics praised the production for its wit, with the film earning a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The production process was as precise as the protagonist’s schemes. Filmed in Ireland over 27 days in 2015, the movie utilized locations like Russborough House and Howth Castle to evoke the Georgian era. Costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh used bold color palettes to signal Lady Susan’s transition from a mourning widow to a confident society figure, contrasting her look with the more ornamental style of her friend, Alicia Johnson. With a score featuring classical composers like Handel and Vivaldi, the film creates a polished, immersive world.
Beyond the screen, Stillman expanded the story by writing a novelization, narrated by Lady Susan’s nephew to counter criticism of his aunt. This project allowed Stillman to address what he perceived as the flawed structure of the original letters. Ultimately, the film stands as a successful, rollicking addition to the Austen canon, celebrating an anti-heroine who is unapologetically honest about her desires and the tactics she employs to achieve them.
