In short: Love & Mercy avoids the standard tropes of a musician's life story by splitting Brian Wilson into two distinct actors. By interweaving the 1960s creative peak of Pet Sounds with his 1980s struggle under a controlling therapist, the film attempts to mirror the experimental, shifting structures of Wilson's own music.

Director Bill Pohlad financed the 2014 film himself, driven by an obsession with the Beach Boys' creative process. Rather than a conventional narrative, Pohlad and writer Oren Moverman opted for a dual-timeline structure. Paul Dano portrays the young, visionary Wilson during the mid-1960s, while John Cusack plays the older, heavily medicated version under the sway of psychologist Dr. Eugene Landy. This choice was deliberate; the filmmakers wanted to capture the mystery of how the vibrant, creative young man became the detached, traumatized figure of the 1980s.

The production prioritized authenticity over Hollywood polish. To recreate the studio atmosphere, the crew filmed in the actual rooms where the Beach Boys recorded, such as EastWest Studios. They employed documentary-style cinematography using Super 16 cameras, often improvising scenes with real musicians to capture the raw, unscripted energy of a recording session. Paul Dano immersed himself in Wilson's life, learning to play piano and gaining weight, while composer Atticus Ross created an original score that blended Beach Boys melodies with experimental textures to evoke Wilson's internal state.

While the film is widely praised for its meticulous detail, it is not without minor inaccuracies. Critics and historians have noted that the film simplifies certain events, such as the role of Wilson's family in removing him from Landy's care. However, Brian Wilson himself and his wife, Melinda Ledbetter, were closely involved in the production, ensuring the portrayal of his personality remained truthful. Even when events seemed too bizarre to be believed—such as Landy's eccentric therapy methods—the filmmakers opted to keep them in, fearing that audiences would otherwise dismiss the reality of Wilson's experience as mere screenwriter invention.
