A turbulent 1927 recording session captures the raw cost of ambition and racial trauma
In short: In his final screen performance, Chadwick Boseman stars alongside Viola Davis in a searing adaptation of August Wilson’s play. The film follows a blues legend and her band during a single, volatile day in a Chicago studio, where the pursuit of artistic control collides with the harsh realities of systemic exploitation.
Set in 1927 Chicago, the film centers on a high-stakes recording session for the legendary blues singer Ma Rainey. While Rainey understands that her white producers view her merely as a commodity, she exerts her power by making exacting demands, including insisting that her stuttering nephew record the album's opening lines. Her band, however, faces a different struggle. Levee, an ambitious and hot-headed trumpeter, clashes with the older, more seasoned musicians as he pushes for his own record deal, unaware that the producers intend only to strip him of his original compositions.
The narrative is deeply marked by the trauma of the Jim Crow era. Through intense dialogue, the band members recount harrowing personal histories of violence and humiliation at the hands of white men. These stories underscore the film's central tension: the conflict between Levee’s desperate, reckless drive for individual success and the collective, often religious, resilience of his bandmates. As the session wears on, the pressure of these unresolved tensions leads to a tragic, explosive climax that leaves the band shattered.
Directed by George C. Wolfe and produced by Denzel Washington, the film serves as a poignant tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer in August 2020. His portrayal of Levee was widely celebrated, earning him a posthumous Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination. Alongside Viola Davis’s powerful performance as the titular blues icon, the film received critical acclaim for its production design and its faithful, visceral adaptation of August Wilson’s 1982 work, ultimately securing two Academy Awards for its technical craft.
