How a simple house-sitting job turned into a high-stakes war against a bumblebee
In short: Rowan Atkinson returns to his roots in a slapstick battle against a persistent insect. While house-sitting a luxurious mansion, Trevor Bingley finds his life unraveling as he attempts to eliminate a single bumblebee, leading to a cascade of irreparable damage and comedic chaos across nine episodes of pure physical comedy.
Created by Rowan Atkinson and William Davies, Man vs Bee represents a long-gestating project that finally reached screens on 24 June 2022. The concept originated from a 1992 Mr. Bean segment, though Atkinson distinguishes his new character, Trevor, as a sweeter, more normal individual prone to obsessive tendencies, rather than the narcissistic, anarchic persona of his most famous creation. The production process was unconventional; Atkinson initially envisioned a movie-length story, which was subsequently expanded into nine episodes, necessitating the addition of cliffhangers to maintain narrative momentum.
The technical execution of the series required significant ingenuity. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the team could not film in a real residence, opting instead for Bovingdon Studios for interiors and various locations across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire for exterior shots. The titular bee was a hybrid of physical models and computer-generated imagery created by Framestore. To heighten the sense of luxury, the production featured branded goods and even borrowed a rare Jaguar E-Type, though a replica was constructed specifically for the scenes where Trevor inevitably causes destruction.
Critical reception was generally favorable, with a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers like Steve Bennett and Anita Singh praised Atkinson’s enduring physical comedy skills, while others, such as Imogen West-Knights, noted that the series lacked the specific, queasy charm of Mr. Bean. Some critics pointed to pacing issues, suggesting the premise struggled to sustain its length, and others questioned the heavy reliance on product placement. Despite these critiques, the show found a significant audience, accumulating 25.4 million viewing hours globally by early July 2022, proving that the classic formula of man versus nature remains a potent draw for viewers.
The project also served a wider purpose beyond entertainment. During promotion, three sculptures of Atkinson were unveiled at St Paul’s Cathedral to raise awareness for the challenges facing native British bees and pollinators. Following the success of the original series, the creative team expanded the concept, releasing a follow-up miniseries titled Man vs Baby in December 2025.
