From soap operas to screenwriting: the evolution of Mary Page Keller
In short: Before becoming a staple of television drama and a prolific screenwriter, Mary Page Keller honed her craft in musical theatre and child productions. Her career trajectory illustrates a versatile transition from daytime soap operas to primetime sitcoms, and eventually into the world of independent film production.
Mary Page Keller's professional foundation was built on diverse training and early performance. She began her journey as a child in productions at Toby's Dinner Theatre under director Toby Orenstein. Following her studies at the Boston Conservatory of Music and the University of Maryland, she acted in musical theatre across New York and Washington, D.C., prior to moving to Los Angeles.
Her entry into the television industry began in 1982 with the daytime soap opera Ryan's Hope, where she played Amanda Kirkland. This was followed by a role as Sally Frame on Another World from 1983 to 1985. By the late 1980s, Keller transitioned to primetime comedy, starring as Laura Kelly in the Fox series Duet (1987–1989) and its spin-off, Open House (1989–90). During this period, she headlined various brief ABC sitcoms such as Joe's Life (1993), Camp Wilder (1992–93), and Baby Talk (1991–92).
Beyond acting, Keller established herself as a producer and writer. In the late 1980s, she and her husband, Thomas Ian Griffith, formed Ian Page Productions, co-producing films such as Night of the Warrior (released 1991) and Ulterior Motives (1991). Her recent career focus has turned to screenwriting; she collaborated on the Netflix show Virgin River and also co-authored the family dance school drama The Dunnings. Her career remains marked by a prolific list of guest appearances on major series like NCIS, Criminal Minds, and Mad Men, as well as a notable film role in the 2010 comedy-drama Beginners.
