Why Springfield's corrupt mayor is a masterclass in political satire

In short: Mayor Diamond Joe Quimby is more than a cartoon caricature of a corrupt politician. As a composite parody of the Kennedy family, he blends Boston elite mannerisms with blatant criminality. From embezzling tax funds to bribing his way out of scandals, Quimby remains an untouchable fixture of Springfield's political landscape.

First appearing in the episode Bart Gets an F, Mayor Quimby is voiced by Dan Castellaneta, who employs a Boston accent reminiscent of John F. Kennedy. His character serves as a satirical composite of Ted Kennedy and other political figures from that dynasty. Quimby’s life mirrors these inspirations through his Irish heritage, his coastal Quimby Compound, and a tendency to throw money at political problems. Even his nickname, Diamond Joe, is a deliberate nod to the historical figure Diamond Jim Brady.

Quimby’s tenure as mayor of Springfield is defined by extreme corruption, a fact proudly displayed on his office wall with the Latin motto Corruptus in Extremis. His political strategy relies on opportunistic maneuvering, including taking bribes from local figures like Fat Tony and providing kickbacks to Police Chief Wiggum. Despite his open admissions of fraud—including the use of taxpayer money to fund the murder of his enemies—he consistently secures re-election, often by manipulating public sentiment or exploiting the town's political apathy.

Beyond his professional misconduct, Quimby is portrayed as a notorious womanizer, once facing 27 separate paternity suits. His personal life is marked by frequent scandals, such as accidentally courting his own niece and maintaining a revolving door of mistresses. While he occasionally faces challenges from a small, ghoulish Republican elite or temporary replacements like a council of Mensa members, he invariably returns to power. Literary critic Paul Cantor describes him as an atomistic demagogue who, despite his flaws, is uniquely Springfield's own.

The character’s cultural impact has transcended the show. In 2013, reporter Justin Peters compared the then-mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, to Quimby, noting their shared history of gaffes and scandals. Even Ted Kennedy himself once leaned into the parody, appearing in a video to invite the premiere of The Simpsons Movie to Springfield, Massachusetts, while playfully mocking his own famous pronunciation of chowder.
