How a Ponzi scheme and a political career launched a hit sitcom
In short: When a family scandal leaves a local politician in charge of her niece and nephew, she hires a bankrupt former commodities trader to be their live-in nanny. This premise anchored Melissa & Joey, a successful sitcom that reunited two 1990s teen idols for four seasons on ABC Family.
Melissa & Joey, which aired from 2010 to 2015, centered on the unlikely domestic partnership between city councilwoman Melanie Burke and Joseph Longo. The series was born from a high-stakes premise: after Mel's sister and brother-in-law were implicated in a Ponzi scheme, Mel found herself suddenly responsible for her niece, Lennox, and nephew, Ryder. Joe, a former commodities trader who lost his fortune and marriage in the same financial scandal, was hired to manage the household. The show leaned into the chemistry between stars Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence, both of whom served as executive producers and directed episodes.
The sitcom was a significant performer for ABC Family. During its second season, it ranked as the network's number one telecast at 8 o'clock for key demographics, including viewers aged 18–34 and 18–49. By the third season, the show achieved multi-week highs in viewership across these same age groups. The production was filmed before a live studio audience at the CBS Studio Center, with exterior shots of the family home filmed in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles.
Despite its success, the series faced challenges as the television landscape shifted. By the fourth season, ratings began to decline, a trend that mirrored a broader industry contraction in network subscribers. To mitigate this, the network experimented with digital distribution, accelerating the availability of episodes on Hulu Plus to just three weeks after the initial broadcast. The show reached a milestone of 100 episodes before concluding its run on August 5, 2015. While early reviews criticized the show for its reliance on the 'will they, won't they' dynamic seen in the stars' previous collaboration, My Fake Fiance, the characters eventually married in the third season, evolving the narrative as they navigated political campaigns and family life.
