In short: Before becoming a staple of late-night sketch comedy, Michael McDonald was a bank employee and a swim instructor. His journey from a business degree at USC to a decade-long tenure on MADtv reveals the unexpected pivot from corporate stability to comedic stardom.

Born in Fullerton, California, on December 31, 1964, Michael James McDonald's path to comedy was anything but linear. Following his business studies at the University of Southern California, his first professional role was in the banking sector. However, a chance encounter at an improv show at The Groundlings Theater changed his trajectory, leading him to quit his banking job to enroll in their improv program.

McDonald became a member of The Groundlings troupe between 1992 and 1997, a period during which he also worked writing and directing films for Roger Corman. This training laid the groundwork for his television career, which included guest appearances on iconic series such as Seinfeld, Scrubs, and NewsRadio. He also lent his voice to the MTV series Clone High as the character Gandhi.

His most significant impact on television came in 1998 when he joined the cast of MADtv. He would remain with the sketch comedy show for ten seasons, making him the program's longest-tenured cast member. Throughout his tenure, he became known for a variety of recurring characters, such as Stuart Larkin, Rusty Miller, and Marvin Tikvah.

Beyond his performance work, McDonald has established himself as a versatile director and writer. He has directed 12 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and served as a writer, director, and producer for Cougar Town. His diverse career spans from early film work like 1994's The Crazysitter to his 2010 Showtime stand-up special, Michael McDonald: Model Citizen.
