Can a group of children trapped in a time loop survive an immortal threat?
In short: In Tim Burton's 2016 dark fantasy, a teenager discovers a hidden refuge for children with paranormal abilities. These Peculiars live in a time loop set to September 3, 1943, to escape persecution. But they are hunted by Hollowgasts, disfigured monsters seeking immortality by consuming the eyes of their kind.
The film, based on the 2011 novel by Ransom Riggs, follows Jake Portman, who travels to a remote island off the coast of Wales to investigate his grandfather's mysterious death. There, he finds the ruins of a home destroyed by a Luftwaffe raid, only to discover that the residents still exist within a temporal pocket. These children, led by the headmistress Miss Alma Lefay Peregrine, are Ymbrynes or Peculiars—individuals with unique traits ranging from aerokinesis to superhuman strength.
The primary antagonists are Hollowgasts, former Peculiar scientists who failed in an experiment to achieve immortality. Led by the shapeshifting Mr. Barron, these creatures and their Wight allies hunt Peculiars to harvest their eyeballs, which allows them to regain a human appearance. Barron’s pursuit of immortality drives the conflict, as he attempts to capture Ymbrynes to repeat the failed experiment on a larger scale. The narrative spans multiple time loops, including a January 2016 loop in Blackpool, England, where the final confrontation takes place.
While the film received mixed reviews, critics praised Tim Burton’s visual atmosphere and direction. It was a commercial success, grossing $318 million worldwide against a $110 million production budget. The story explores themes of belonging and protection, as Jake eventually embraces his own identity as a Peculiar, capable of seeing the invisible Hollows, and joins the children in their journey to find a safe, permanent home across time.
