In short: My Friends, or Amici miei, is a 1975 Italian masterpiece that captures the desperate, hilarious attempt of four middle-aged men to remain forever young. Directed by Mario Monicelli, this film about elaborate pranks and lifelong bonds became a cultural phenomenon, even beating Steven Spielberg’s Jaws to reach number one in Italy.

The film’s origins are rooted in tragedy. It was originally a project by Pietro Germi, who passed away before he could bring it to life. In a final tribute, the opening credits honor Germi as the author, with Mario Monicelli credited as director. Monicelli, who was raised in Tuscany, shifted the setting from Bologna to Florence, infusing the narrative with his own youthful experiences. Many of the film’s central pranks, known as zingarate, were inspired by real-life tricks Monicelli played in his youth.

The story follows four friends—Count Mascetti, an impoverished noble; Perozzi, a journalist; Melandri, an architect; and Necchi, a cafe owner—who navigate middle age through a series of elaborate, often cruel, practical jokes. They are eventually joined by a surgeon, Professor Sassaroli, in whose clinic they recover after a particularly disastrous prank. The film’s tone is famously bittersweet, exploring how these men use their antics to stave off the reality of adult life and their own mortality.

The film’s conclusion is perhaps its most poignant moment. Even after the death of Perozzi, the friends refuse to abandon their irreverent humor. During the funeral, they continue their elaborate hoaxes, tricking a pensioner named Righi into believing Perozzi was murdered for being a mafia traitor. The scene captures the essence of the film: a refusal to accept the finality of life, even when faced with the ultimate loss. The film’s legacy was cemented by two sequels, Amici miei – Atto II in 1982 and Amici miei – Atto III in 1985, though the original remains a definitive exploration of friendship and the desperate, often absurd, human need to prolong childhood.
