Does the United States Declaration of Independence really hide a secret treasure map?
In short: The 2004 film National Treasure captivated audiences with the premise that a map to a massive Freemason fortune is hidden on the back of the Declaration of Independence. While the movie became a global box office success, the reality of the document is far less adventurous and entirely map-free.
Released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2004, National Treasure follows historian Benjamin Franklin Gates, played by Nicolas Cage, as he attempts to protect the Declaration of Independence from a criminal syndicate. The plot hinges on the idea that invisible ink on the back of the document reveals a path to a legendary treasure. The film was a commercial hit, grossing over $347 million worldwide against a $100 million budget, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics who often highlighted its highly improbable narrative.
In reality, the National Archives has confirmed that the document contains no such map. A 2019 video from the institution clarified that the only writing on the back is the phrase 'Original Declaration of Independence, dated 4th July 1776,' which served as a simple label for storage purposes. Furthermore, the film's depiction of visible ink is historically inaccurate, as the document's original ink had largely faded by 1876 due to prolonged exposure to light.
The film's legacy persists through its franchise, including the 2007 sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets and a 2022 Disney+ series. While the production team has faced years of difficulty developing a third installment, producer Jerry Bruckheimer indicated in October 2025 that a script is nearing completion with Nicolas Cage expected to return. Despite the historical inaccuracies, the film remains a cultural touchstone, even earning praise from academic David Bordwell for its adherence to classical Hollywood adventure traditions.
