A musical fantasy about reincarnation that was nearly an hour longer than its release
In short: In the 1970 film On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, a psychiatrist hypnotizes a patient only to discover her past life as a 19th-century aristocrat. While the film is now a cult favorite, studio executives forced director Vincente Minnelli to slash nearly an hour of footage before release.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Barbra Streisand, the film is an adaptation of Alan Jay Lerner’s 1965 stage musical. The plot centers on Daisy Gamble, a clairvoyant chain smoker who seeks hypnotherapy from Marc Chabot to quit nicotine. During their sessions, Chabot uncovers Daisy’s previous incarnation as Lady Melinda Winifred Waine Tentrees, a seductive coquette born to a kitchen maid. As the psychiatrist becomes infatuated with the exotic Melinda rather than the contemporary Daisy, the narrative explores themes of identity, obsession, and the blurred lines between past and future lives.
The production was marked by significant creative friction and structural changes. Paramount Pictures originally envisioned a three-hour roadshow experience, but executives demanded substantial cuts. These deletions included several musical numbers, such as 'Wait Till We’re Sixty-Five' and 'Who Is There Among Us Who Knows?'. Author Mark Griffin notes that even a mysterious sequence titled 'People Like Me'—which featured Streisand in a futuristic outfit—was excised. These edits fundamentally altered the film’s pacing and character development, leaving behind a version that critics at the time described as a mix of 'fits and starts'.
Despite its troubled edit, the film remains visually striking, particularly in its regression sequences filmed at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. While contemporary reviews were mixed—with some critics finding the modern-day sequences 'Broadway-bland'—the film has since achieved a rare 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The contrast between Minnelli’s lush period aesthetics and the mundane reality of 1970s New York City creates a unique, if uneven, cinematic experience that continues to fascinate fans of the genre.
