Why did the world's politest bear trade London's rainy streets for the Amazon rainforest?
In short: Paddington returns to his roots in a globe-trotting adventure that tests the bonds of the Brown family. As the beloved bear journeys to Peru to find his missing Aunt Lucy, he uncovers ancient secrets and faces a dangerous quest for a mythical city, all while navigating a changing family dynamic.
In the third installment of the franchise, Paddington in Peru, the story shifts from the familiar streets of London to the rugged landscapes of the Andes. The narrative follows Paddington and the Brown family as they travel to the Amazon rainforest to locate Aunt Lucy, who has gone missing from the Home for Retired Bears. The film draws inspiration from the adventurous spirit of Werner Herzog’s works, blending the myth of the golden city of El Dorado with the modern realities of a family drifting apart.
Director Dougal Wilson, making his feature film debut, navigates a complex plot involving a riverboat captain named Hunter Cabot and his cousin, the Reverend Mother, who both seek the legendary riches of El Dorado. The film explores themes of legacy and reconciliation, culminating in a discovery that reveals El Dorado as the birthplace of Paddington himself. Despite the high-stakes treasure hunt, the heart of the film remains the character's signature kindness, exemplified by a post-credits scene where Paddington and his kin visit the imprisoned Phoenix Buchanan.
Released in 2024 and 2025, the film achieved a worldwide gross of $211 million. It received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its agreeable nature, though some noted a shift in tone compared to its predecessors. The production faced challenges, including the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which led to casting changes and filming adjustments. Nevertheless, the franchise continues to expand, with a fourth film currently in development, signaling that Paddington’s cinematic journey is far from over.
