In short: In the 1985 Western Pale Rider, a stranger arrives on a pale horse to defend prospectors against a ruthless mining baron. With six mysterious bullet wounds on his back and a supernatural aura, the Preacher leaves audiences debating whether he is a divine miracle or a vengeful spirit returned from death.

Directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, Pale Rider was the only Western he produced during the 1980s. The film follows a group of independent miners in California being intimidated by a powerful mining baron, Coy LaHood. After a young girl named Megan prays for deliverance, a mysterious man—referred to only as Preacher—rides into their camp. He quickly becomes their protector, using his fists and eventually his pistols to dismantle LaHood’s operation and his hired muscle, including the corrupt marshal Stockburn.

The film’s title draws directly from the Book of Revelation, which describes Death as one of the Four Horsemen riding a pale horse. Eastwood himself has confirmed in an audio interview that his character is an 'out-and-out ghost.' Unlike his earlier film, High Plains Drifter, which used flashbacks to hint at the protagonist's past, Pale Rider offers no such narrative clarity. The only evidence of the Preacher's history are the six bullet scars on his back, which mirror the wounds he inflicts upon the villainous Stockburn in the final shootout.

Released in June 1985, the film was a significant commercial success, grossing over $41 million against a budget of $6.9 million. It arrived at a critical moment for the genre, serving as the first major Hollywood Western following the financial failure of Heaven's Gate in 1980. While some critics like Richard Corliss found the film derivative of classics like Shane, others, including Roger Ebert, hailed it as a considerable achievement. The film remains a subject of fascination for its blend of spiritual themes, biblical allusions, and the stoic, enigmatic performance of its director.
