Jackie Chan trades Hong Kong for the mainland in this dark, gritty franchise reboot
In short: In the sixth installment of the Police Story series, Jackie Chan departs from his iconic role as a Hong Kong officer to play a mainland Chinese detective. This neo-noir thriller, titled Police Story 2013, swaps the series' traditional comedic tone for a claustrophobic, high-stakes hostage drama set inside a nightclub.
Directed by Ding Sheng, who previously collaborated with Chan on Little Big Soldier, the film represents a significant tonal shift for the franchise. Released in China in December 2013, the movie follows Detective Zhong Wen as he navigates a trap set by the vengeful owner of Wu Bar. Unlike the action-heavy spectacles of earlier films, the narrative centers on a psychological game of cat-and-mouse, where Zhong must protect his estranged daughter, Miao Miao, while uncovering the dark history behind the kidnapper's motives.
The plot revolves around a tragic incident from the past involving the death of the antagonist's pregnant sister. The kidnapper, Wu Jiang, seeks retribution against those he deems responsible for her suicide, including Zhong and other witnesses present at the scene years prior. This focus on trauma and revenge creates a somber atmosphere, distinguishing the film from the lighter, more stunt-driven entries that defined the series for decades. The production, which began in Beijing in November 2012, required Chan to adopt a new look, including a shorter haircut to embody the persona of a mainland officer.
Despite the star power of Jackie Chan, the film received a polarized reception upon its release. Critics were divided, with the movie holding a 14% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 44% rating on Metacritic. While some appreciated the darker, more grounded approach to the character, others found the departure from the series' roots jarring. Regardless of the critical consensus, the film remains a unique experiment in the franchise, showcasing a more vulnerable, introspective side of the legendary actor as he reconciles with his on-screen daughter amidst the wreckage of a failed criminal plot.
