The city that failed to boom preserved its past by accident
In short: In the late 19th century, Port Townsend was destined to be the largest harbor on the West Coast. When the railroad bypassed it, the economy collapsed almost instantly. This sudden failure created a unique cultural preservation: because there was no money to build over the old, the Victorian era remains perfectly intact.
During the late 1800s, Port Townsend was a high-stakes maritime hub fueled by intense speculation. Investors built ornate Victorian architecture under the belief that the city would become a premier shipping port and a major metropolitan center. It was known as the "City of Dreams" and the "Key City," guarding the gate of Puget Sound. However, the economic boom was short-lived. The capital disappeared as the Northern Pacific Railroad neglected to link the town with Tacoma, situated on the eastern Puget Sound. By the late 1890s, the boom was over, and the town shrank as investors sought better returns elsewhere.
This rapid decline worked as a preservation mechanism. Because the economy was so weak for nearly a century following the 1890s, there was no industrial demand or capital to tear down or build over the existing structures. While other Pacific Northwest cities were ravaged by fire and earthquakes, Port Townsend's Victorian buildings remained largely untouched. This "accidental" preservation was eventually recognized and fostered in the 20th century, leading to the Port Townsend Historic District being designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.
Today, the city has transitioned into a cultural and arts community. It hosts an international film festival (established in 1999), a Wooden Boat Festival, and various music and theater events. The historic landscape now includes a 1913 Carnegie Library and a Romanesque courthouse with a 125-foot bell tower. While it once dreamed of being a global shipping giant, it now serves as a sanctuary for independent boatbuilders, artists, and maritime crafts.
