In short: Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer aimed to replicate the success of Pirates of the Caribbean by adapting Prince of Persia. But translating an interactive experience into a cinematic one required more than just a bigger budget; it required re-conceiving the very nature of how a story is told.

Jerry Bruckheimer Films attempted to purchase the 2003 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time game rights during 2004. The goal was to create a 'mega-franchise' similar to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Jordan Mechner, who originally created the series, was employed to draft the screenplay for this purpose. Instead of a direct conversion, Mechner intentionally reimagined the plot to move from player-driven interactions to a cinematic narrative for viewers.

The production faced significant hurdles, including the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike and a need for extensive special effects. To ensure a high-quality finish, Disney postponed the release date to May 28, 2010, to avoid the 2008 Screen Actors Guild strike and to coordinate a massive marketing campaign. The film was positioned as a 'tentpole' project, with a production budget estimated between $150 million and $200 million.

The film premiered in London on May 9, 2010, before a staggered international release. It opened at the third spot in the American box office, trailing Shrek Forever After and Sex and the City 2, despite earning over $336.4 million. The domestic theatrical rankings placed it behind both Sex and the City 2 and Shrek Forever After. Even with varied critiques, it remained the top-earning video game movie until Warcraft took that position in 2016. The project also spawned a complex ecosystem of merchandise, including a Lego deal and a prequel graphic novel, while a separate Ubisoft game was released simultaneously to capture different audience segments.

The narrative itself blended elements from three different games—The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones—into a cohesive fantasy epic. It centered on Dastan, a street urchin who discovers a sacred dagger capable of manipulating time. The plot follows his struggle against Nizam, who seeks to use the Sands of Time to rewrite his own history, ultimately leading to a climax where Dastan must confront the consequences of temporal manipulation.
