The thunder god of Mortal Kombat was inspired by a 1986 cult classic film
In short: Raiden, the iconic protector of Earthrealm, owes his existence to a visit to a museum and a specific character from the movie Big Trouble in Little China. While fans once debated the meaning of his gibberish battle cries, his evolution from mentor to ruthless dark deity defines the franchise's complex narrative.
Designer John Tobias conceived Raiden after visiting the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. While researching Japanese artifacts, he encountered the traditional Shinto deity Raijin, often depicted as a small, red-skinned demon beating a drum. Seeking a more formidable aesthetic, Tobias pivoted to the character Lightning from the 1986 film Big Trouble in Little China, adopting his conical hat and lightning-conjuring abilities for the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The character's name became a point of contention due to trademark concerns regarding a shoot 'em up game by Seibu Kaihatsu. Consequently, console ports and early adaptations often spelled his name as Rayden, a choice Ed Boon reportedly disliked. Beyond his name, Raiden's portrayal has shifted dramatically over decades. While he began as a stoic mentor figure, later storylines—particularly following the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance—saw him descend into a more ruthless, corrupt version of himself, often referred to as Dark Raiden.
Raiden's narrative arc is frequently criticized for its repetition, yet his darker turns have been welcomed by reviewers as a necessary evolution. His role has spanned various media, including live-action films, animated series, and even guest appearances in titles like Injustice 2 and Fortnite. Despite his status as a god, he has faced significant challenges, including being forbidden from participating in tournaments and enduring the loss of his immortality to protect Earthrealm. In the 2023 reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, the character was reimagined as a mortal field worker, highlighting the franchise's ongoing willingness to reinvent its most enduring icons.
