How a century-old vampire servant became the star of a modern action-comedy
In short: Renfield, the long-suffering familiar of Count Dracula, finally steps out of the shadows in this 2023 horror-comedy. By blending the classic 1931 Dracula aesthetic with a contemporary, gore-splattered story of codependency, the film reimagines a legendary servant’s quest for independence—and a life beyond his master’s bloodthirsty demands.
The 2023 film Renfield originated from a pitch by Robert Kirkman, who sought to pivot away from the failed Universal Monsters shared universe. After the critical and commercial disappointment of the 2017 reboot of The Mummy, the studio shifted its strategy toward individual storytelling. Director Chris McKay, who replaced original director Dexter Fletcher, envisioned the project as a 'quasi-sequel' to the 1931 Dracula. The film even features black-and-white opening sequences that digitally insert stars Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage into the original 1931 footage, replacing Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye.
The narrative follows Renfield, who has served Dracula for ninety years, as he attempts to break free from his toxic, codependent relationship. While seeking a new purpose in New Orleans, Renfield joins a self-help group and crosses paths with a police officer, Rebecca Quincy. The film leans heavily into action-comedy tropes, with Renfield gaining supernatural abilities by consuming bugs. Despite the creative premise, the film struggled at the box office, grossing only $26.9 million against a $65 million budget, and received mixed reviews from critics who noted that the execution often fell short of its high-concept potential.
Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Dracula was heavily influenced by his study of previous iconic performances, including those by Bela Lugosi, Frank Langella, and Gary Oldman. Cage aimed to bring a unique movement and tone to the role, drawing inspiration from films like An American Werewolf in London. While the film was ultimately considered a box-office bomb, it found some recognition in awards circles, with Cage winning Best Supporting Actor at the 51st Saturn Awards. The production itself faced challenges, including a burglary of over twenty crew vehicles during filming in New Orleans in February 2022.
