In short: When Capcom announced Resident Evil: Vendetta, they called it a "reboot." In reality, it was a tonal shift designed to modernize the franchise's aesthetic while keeping its core legacy intact. This 2017 CG film navigated a complex production balance between two of gaming's biggest icons.

The production of Resident Evil: Vendetta was defined by creative compromise and character balancing. Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi pushed for Leon S. Kennedy as the primary protagonist, while the film's producers favored Chris Redfield. The final product integrated both leads into a narrative centered on the "Animality Virus" (A-virus). This virus featured three distinct components—a base, a trigger, and a vaccine—and was developed by Glenn Arias, an arms dealer seeking revenge against the U.S. government for a drone strike that killed his family.

The film also served as a vehicle to explore the maturity of Professor Rebecca Chambers. Having been a survivor of the original Mansion Incident, her return allowed the team to depict her growth over several years. The narrative links back to established lore, specifically the Las Plagas bioweapon encountered by Leon in Europe. This connection suggested that cult members were providing information to Arias, creating a bridge between past and present threats.

Despite its "reboot" branding, Capcom clarified that the film functioned as a sequel to previous CG entries like Degeneration (2008) and Damnation (2012). It debuted in Japan on May 27, 2017, and featured an action-heavy climax where Leon rode a Ducati XDiavel motorcycle. While critical reception was polarized—with some reviewers praising the "anime-inspired action" and others criticizing the script's pace—it successfully paved the way for its 2023 sequel, Death Island.

The film's commercial performance was modest, grossing approximately $1.6 million worldwide. However, it remains a significant milestone in the franchise's transition into high-fidelity CG animation, blending traditional biopunk horror with modern cinematic techniques.
