Vin Diesel risked his home to produce the 2013 sci-fi sequel Riddick
In short: To bring the third installment of the Riddick franchise to the screen, Vin Diesel had to personally finance the production. Facing a lack of studio funding, the actor leveraged his own house to ensure the film was completed, fearing he would be left homeless if the project failed to finish.
Released in September 2013, Riddick serves as a sequel to the 2004 film The Chronicles of Riddick. The story follows the titular character, a notorious outlaw and the last of the Furyan race, who finds himself abandoned on a desolate planet after being betrayed by his own subordinates. Stripped of his status as Lord Marshal of the Necromonger fleet, he must rely on his primal instincts to survive against native predators, including venomous, scorpion-like creatures known as Mud Demons.
The production process was a long-term labor of love for Diesel and director David Twohy. In 2006, Diesel secured the rights to the franchise by agreeing to a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Despite the tepid reception of the second film, the duo remained committed to a third entry, eventually securing the necessary resources through Diesel's personal financial intervention. Filming took place between January and March 2012, utilizing locations such as the White Desert in Egypt to establish the film's unique off-planet atmosphere.
Upon its release, the film achieved moderate box-office success, grossing over $98 million worldwide. Critical reception was mixed, with some reviewers praising the return to the stripped-down intensity of the original Pitch Black, while others criticized the dialogue and character depth. Despite the polarized response, the film's performance on home media was strong enough to prompt Universal to pursue further installments. Development on a fourth film, titled Riddick: Furya, has been ongoing for years, with production scheduled to begin in August 2024 across Germany, Spain, and the U.K.
