A modern, gritty retelling of the Robin Hood legend that failed at the box office.
In short: The 2018 action-adventure film Robin Hood attempted to reimagine the classic folklore with a modern, high-octane twist. Despite a star-studded cast and a massive production budget, the project was widely panned by critics and suffered a significant financial loss, ultimately becoming a cautionary tale of failed cinematic reinvention.
Directed by Otto Bathurst and released by Lionsgate in November 2018, the film stars Taron Egerton as the titular aristocrat-turned-rebel. The plot follows Robin of Loxley, who returns from the Third Crusade to find his estate seized by the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham. Alongside a fierce Arabian warrior named Little John, played by Jamie Foxx, Robin adopts the persona of a masked vigilante to steal from the wealthy and fund a rebellion against the church and state.
The production faced numerous hurdles, including scheduling conflicts for its lead actor and a series of location changes from Croatia to France and Hungary. With a production budget of $100 million, the film struggled to find an audience. It grossed only $84.8 million worldwide, leading to an estimated loss of $83.7 million for the studio. Critics were particularly harsh, with the film holding a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers frequently criticized the movie for its anachronistic dialogue, reliance on tired action tropes, and a lack of narrative depth.
Beyond its financial failure, the film was compared to other unsuccessful attempts to modernize classic legends, such as 2017's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. It even earned three Razzie nominations, including Worst Picture. While the film attempted to offer a fresh perspective on the source material by framing the Crusades as a church-funded ploy for power, it ultimately failed to resonate with audiences or critics, cementing its status as a significant box-office bomb.
