Why a jazz legend's final performance became the definitive portrait of a musician's life
In short: Director Bertrand Tavernier defied studio executives to cast real-life tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon as the lead in his 1986 drama, Round Midnight. The result is a haunting, authentic exploration of addiction and artistry, featuring a soundtrack by Herbie Hancock that captures the soul of the mid-century jazz scene.
The film follows Dale Turner, a struggling jazz musician in 1950s New York who seeks refuge in Paris to escape his substance abuse. There, he finds an unlikely guardian in Francis, a French graphic designer who idolizes him. Based on the real-life experiences of jazz legends Lester Young and Bud Powell, the narrative draws heavily from the memoir Dance of the Infidels by Francis Paudras, who had befriended Powell during his own time in Paris.
Tavernier’s commitment to authenticity extended beyond the casting of Gordon. He populated the screen with actual jazz luminaries, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and John McLaughlin, ensuring the music felt lived-in rather than staged. Gordon, who had played alongside Powell in the early 1960s, even contributed to rewriting the script. This collaborative atmosphere allowed the film to bypass the typical artifice of musical biopics, resulting in a performance that Roger Ebert described as possessing an eerie magnetism, dignity, and wisdom.
The film’s impact was both critical and commercial. Herbie Hancock secured an Academy Award for Best Original Score, while Gordon earned a nomination for Best Actor and a Grammy for his work on the soundtrack. The music was released across two distinct albums, both produced and arranged by Hancock, representing some of Gordon's final recordings. With a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film remains a rare example of a drama that successfully matches the emotional weight of the jazz music it celebrates.
