In short: When a couple’s private island wedding is interrupted by pirates demanding a $45 million ransom, the celebration transforms into a chaotic fight for survival. This 2022 romantic action comedy features a star-studded cast and a production history as turbulent as the film's fictional hostage crisis.

Directed by Jason Moore and written by Mark Hammer, Shotgun Wedding follows Tom and Darcy, whose destination wedding in the Philippines is derailed when pirates take their guests hostage. The captors demand $45 million from Darcy’s wealthy father, Robert, who refuses to pay without proof of life. As the couple navigates their own relationship doubts while evading capture, they eventually discover that the heist was orchestrated by Darcy’s ex-fiancé, Sean, with help from Robert’s girlfriend, Harriet. The film culminates in a frantic rescue mission involving grenades, fireworks, and a fatal helicopter collision.

The production journey was marked by significant casting changes. Initially announced in January 2019 with Ryan Reynolds attached to star, the project underwent several shifts. Armie Hammer was later cast as the male lead but departed in January 2021 following abuse allegations. Josh Duhamel entered negotiations to replace him shortly after, joining a cast that includes Jennifer Lopez, Sônia Braga, and Jennifer Coolidge. Filming eventually took place between February and April 2021 across locations in Boston and the Dominican Republic.

Although originally slated for a theatrical release by Lionsgate in June 2022, Amazon Studios acquired the rights and premiered the film on Prime Video in January 2023. While it bypassed a wide domestic theatrical release, the film saw an international box office gross of $8.3 million. Nielsen Media Research noted that the film contributed to a 9.3% increase in Amazon Prime Video’s monthly usage during its release month. Critical reception remained mixed, with the film holding a 44% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 46 out of 100 on Metacritic, reflecting a polarized response from audiences and reviewers alike.
