In short: Jackie Chan’s 2016 action comedy Skiptrace blends international intrigue with slapstick humor. Following a Hong Kong detective and an American gambler, the film navigates a complex criminal underworld. Yet, the story behind the camera—marked by casting shifts, tragic accidents, and massive box office success—is as dramatic as the plot.

The development of Skiptrace was a long, winding road. Initially announced in May 2013 as a project for director Sam Fell, the production underwent significant changes. By September 2014, Johnny Knoxville had stepped into the role of the American conman Connor Watts, replacing Seann William Scott. Filming, which spanned locations across China and Hong Kong, was marred by tragedy when cinematographer Chan Kwok-hung drowned during a shoot in December 2014.

The narrative itself follows detective Bennie Chan, played by Jackie Chan, as he attempts to take down a crime lord known as Matador. The plot twists through various international locales, from the casinos of Macau to the landscapes of Mongolia, eventually revealing that the villain is someone from the detective's own past. Despite the film's ambitious scope, critical reception was mixed. Critics like Dennis Harvey appreciated its lively, good-natured spirit, while others, such as Neil Genzlinger, criticized the reliance on repetitive fight sequences and low-brow humor.

Commercially, the film found significant traction in its primary market. Upon its July 2016 release in China, it debuted at the top of the charts, earning 60 million US dollars in its opening weekend alone. By the end of its run, the movie had accumulated a total domestic revenue of 870 million Chinese yuan. While it struggled to impress Western critics—holding a 38 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of June 2020—it remains a notable example of a Sino-American co-production aiming for broad, cross-cultural appeal.
