The bittersweet reality behind the final tour of comedy legends Laurel and Hardy
In short: The 2018 film Stan & Ollie depicts the aging comedy duo embarking on a grueling 1953 UK tour. While the movie portrays a fractured friendship and a desperate attempt to revive their careers, the true story of their final years reveals a far more harmonious, if tragic, professional partnership.
Directed by Jon S. Baird, Stan & Ollie focuses on the later years of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The film dramatizes their 1953 music hall tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, framing it against the backdrop of their struggle to secure funding for a new Robin Hood movie. The narrative highlights the physical toll of their performances and the personal tensions between the two men, including a fictionalized argument over past contract disputes and a supposed betrayal involving Hal Roach.
In reality, the comedians never argued in the manner depicted on screen. Lucille Hardy, Oliver's widow, noted that her husband was only truly angry with Laurel once, and it occurred out of Laurel's hearing. Furthermore, the film's timeline and character details are heavily altered for dramatic effect. For instance, the character of Ida Laurel is based on a former wife rather than the actual Ida Kitaeva Raphael, and the dramatic scene of Laurel waiting for Hardy at Fox Studios is entirely fictitious. The pair did not report to Fox until 1941, well after both had severed ties with Roach.
The actual tour began in October 1953 and lasted eight months, though it was cut short after Hardy suffered a mild heart attack following a performance in Plymouth on May 17, 1954. They returned to the United States on June 2, 1954, and never performed together on stage again. Despite the film's suggestion of a potential replacement, Laurel would have refused to work with anyone else. Oliver Hardy passed away in 1957, and Stan Laurel, who lived until 1965, remained steadfast in his refusal to perform without his partner, continuing only to write material for their act.
