In short: Stargate Atlantis was originally conceived as a feature film set beneath the ice of Antarctica. Instead, it evolved into a five-season television series that transported its cast to a legendary city in the Pegasus Galaxy, forever changing the trajectory of the Stargate franchise and its production history.

Created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, Stargate Atlantis emerged as a spin-off from Stargate SG-1. The producers initially planned for the city of Atlantis to be discovered under the Antarctic ice, serving as a new hub for Stargate Command. However, they eventually relocated the setting to the Pegasus Galaxy. This shift allowed the creative team to avoid the logistical narrative problem of why Earth-based forces wouldn't simply intervene in every crisis, while simultaneously providing a fresh canvas for new stories, characters, and alien threats like the Wraith.

The series production was deeply rooted in Vancouver, British Columbia, utilizing local infrastructure and even inheriting massive sets from the film Blade: Trinity to manage costs. Despite its success, the show faced significant financial pressures, particularly toward the end of its run. The 2008 financial crisis caused a shift in the exchange rate between the American and Canadian dollar, making the Vancouver-based production increasingly expensive. These economic realities, combined with the desire to transition the franchise toward direct-to-DVD movies, led to the show's cancellation after its fifth season in 2009.

The show's legacy is defined by its ensemble cast and its technical evolution. Characters like Dr. Rodney McKay—originally a guest role in SG-1—became central to the expedition's survival as they deciphered Ancient technology. The series finale, "Enemy at the Gate," saw the city of Atlantis return to Earth, landing in the Pacific Ocean near San Francisco. While a direct-to-DVD film titled Stargate: Extinction was scripted and planned for a late 2009 shoot, the project was ultimately cancelled following the cancellation of the subsequent series, Stargate Universe, leaving the final chapter of the Atlantis expedition unfilmed.
