How a legendary Hollywood rivalry tricked Sylvester Stallone into making his worst film ever.
In short: In 1992, Sylvester Stallone starred in the action-comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. It became a critical disaster, earning three Golden Raspberry Awards. Stallone later revealed he only accepted the role because he believed his rival, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was desperate to secure the part for himself.
The film, directed by Roger Spottiswoode, follows Los Angeles police sergeant Joe Bomowski, whose life is upended when his overbearing mother, Tutti, visits from New Jersey. Despite the premise, the production was plagued by creative missteps. Stallone later noted that the script was originally intended to feature a 'nasty' mother figure, but the casting of the famously sweet Estelle Getty fundamentally altered the film's tone, rendering the intended dark comedy ineffective.
The rivalry between Stallone and Schwarzenegger proved more influential than the script itself. Schwarzenegger later admitted he feigned interest in the project specifically to bait Stallone into taking it, knowing the material was poor. Stallone has since described the film as perhaps the worst in the entire solar system, famously joking that its broadcast on government television could theoretically lead to human extinction by lowering birth rates.
Critics were merciless upon the film's February 21, 1992, release. Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel both gave it negative reviews, with Ebert calling it one of the worst movies he had ever seen. Despite a 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film managed to gross $70.6 million worldwide, proving that even a universally panned project can find a commercial audience. The film's legacy persists primarily as a punchline, referenced in everything from Saturday Night Live sketches to The Simpsons and the video game Mortal Kombat 11.
The production remains a cautionary tale of high-concept marketing gone wrong. While Stallone and Getty were both established comedic performers, the film's reliance on predictable mother-son gags failed to resonate. By 2006, when asked which films he regretted, Stallone immediately identified this project as his primary cinematic failure.
