The voice actor who gambled his career to find his craft
In short: In the world of Japanese voice acting, Takehito Koyasu is known for his pursuit of "three-dimensional acting." This wasn't just a stylistic choice; it was a grueling process of retakes and professional risk-taking that transformed a struggling newcomer into a multi-talented industry pillar.
Koyasu's journey began with a cinematic obsession. During junior high school, he frequently skipped class to watch movies, eventually finding inspiration in a specific scene from Adieu Galaxy Express 999. This sparked a lifelong commitment to "three-dimensional acting," a philosophy aimed at bringing depth and internal complexity to characters. However, his early career was marked by significant struggle. In 1989, while playing a regular role in Legend of Heavenly Sphere Shurato, he found the villainous character so opaque that he was forced to perform dozens of retakes for a single line of dialogue.
A pivotal moment of rejection occurred in 1990 during the production of the OVA Aries. Despite winning a reader's poll to play the lead role of Hades, production members rejected the results, fearing his status as a newcomer. He was relegated to a minor role as Minos. This period of uncertainty eventually led to a high-stakes turning point in Tekkaman Blade. Koyasu admits he put his entire career on the line to play the rival Tekkaman Evil (Shinya Aiba) during a period of sluggish performance. While he felt he was succeeding at the time, his later self-reflection on the footage revealed a stark gap between his perception and reality—a hallmark of his ongoing artistic growth.
Beyond voice acting, Koyasu has been a pioneer in diversifying the industry's reach. In the late 1990s, he conceptualized the Weiß Kreuz franchise and formed the unit "Weiß," becoming the first male voice actor to appear on a magazine cover and create a music clip. He also explored music under the name ZAZEL from 2000 to 2001. Today, he balances his legacy with the next generation, frequently appearing with his son, Kōki Koyasu, in advertisements and radio shows, while maintaining his own agency, T's Factory, which he founded in 1998.
